We are Tej and Suneta and we are parents to three wonderful children. Our middle child, is 12-year-old Roop, who is a swan. We are both full-time working parents, alongside managing Roop’s care needs and being mum and dad to a fabulous 14-year-old teenage son and a gorgeous 11-year-old daughter. It’s pretty full on!
What activities did you do to raise money for SWAN UK?
On Saturday 8 August we completed the Yorkshire Three Peak’s Challenge, in very hot weather conditions!
What inspired you to take on this challenge?
Tej (Roop’s dad) has completed this three times before and knowing that I like challenges, challenged me to take it on! How could I refuse? I knew it would be gruelling. My motivation was to raise money for SWAN UK, knowing what a tough time it’s been for so many families and the impact Covid-19 has had on support networks and charities during this time.
Had you done anything like this before?
Yes, I ran the London Marathon in 2018 and regularly take part in half-marathons, but had never climbed mountains before.
Why did you choose to raise money for SWAN UK?
SWAN UK is a life-line for so many affected families and a charity that is close to my heart due to my son’s needs. I want to raise awareness of undiagnosed children and do everything I can to support them.
How much did you raise?
Just slightly under £1,000, but we’re still hoping to raise some more!
Was there any training involved? How did you manage it?
During lock-down I’ve been training through doing a lot of walking, HIIT classes and yoga. I have also been paying particular attention to my nutrition and taking good care of myself. Despite this, it was hard, particularly because I have bunions on both feet and simply couldn’t have understood the impact the terrain, inclines and declines of the surface would have on my feet. It was hideously painful! Tej has done it before, so he’s a pro!
Did you have a secret weapon?
For both of us, I’d say our secret weapon is our Mindset! We are highly skilled and trained at believing that ‘can’t’ doesn’t exist in our vocabulary!
Tej and Suneta doing the three peaks challenge
What was the best moment?
Can I have two? One was was sitting at the peak of the second mountain, Whernside and doing 10 minutes of meditation in the most stunning surrounding and being totally at one with the mountain. Amazing!
Reaching the end was by far the second best moment, after what seemed only relentless and never ending!
Would you do something like this again?
Definitely! Although I’d make sure my shoes were better equipped to deal with my bunions!
Would you recommend it to others?
Most definitely! When you get to the end, you are on such a high and it feels like such an amazing achievement, especially when you know you’ve raised money and made a difference.
