We are a family of three – me, James and our beautiful swan, Anna. We live in Leicester. Anna will be three in October and has been a wonderful mystery to everyone since she was about six months old when we realised that she wasn’t developing the same way as her peers. It is a tough journey, but she makes everything worthwhile. Things that may be insignificant to others become a massive achievement for Anna – we couldn’t be prouder of her!
In the summer we went on our first family day out with SWAN UK, to Twinlakes with SWAN UK. The day was lovely – the best bit was seeing Anna become a bit more independent on the rides and particularly meeting up with other parents and their swans for a picnic lunch.
It can sometimes be tricky to go on days out like this and we feel isolated as other children are able to do more than our Anna, but it felt reassuring to be with families who understood and are in similar positions. We felt uplifted and reassured that there was support out there. It gave us hope for the future.
We met other SWAN UK families and this was extremely beneficial to James and me, and we have kept in contact since. We’re keen to attend many other SWAN family events.
Living with the unknown is very difficult but with the support of SWAN UK we realise that we are not alone and we are blessed with a special, unique child.
We’ve been members of SWAN UK for just over a year and we recently did SWAN UK’s Virtual Marathon as a family and held lots of fundraising events for Undiagnosed Children’s Day. We have found the Facebook groups for members a useful way to share our feelings and find other parents in similar positions. We hope to meet up again with some of the parents we met at this event.
