Caitlin Rose

Caitlin Rose Mallinson was born on 25 October 2011 at 23:28, weighing 9lb 12oz. I had a good pregnancy but a traumatic delivery.

When Caitlin was born she was taken straight to the special care baby unit where she was wired up to machines as she needed a little help – she was the biggest baby in the unit at the time and was there until she was 6 and half weeks old due to not feeding.

We tried everything to get her to feed but she wouldn’t. When she was four weeks, Caitlin started to lose weight. It was then that doctors decided that Caitlin was to be tube-fed – this was so heartbreaking for the family to see; the tube was inserted down through her nose and into her tummy and taped to her face. It was upsetting to see and at that time we didn’t know what her future was going to be. Her nanny Jackie made her lots of headbands that were all different for Caitlin to wear to help stop her from pulling the tube out.

At six and half weeks old Caitlin was transferred over to Yeovil District Hospital – we stayed for a week so a plan of action could be made for her for when she went home. During this time my husband joined SWAN UK.

This is a fantastic network: we were not judged and there were lots of people to talk to. To this day we are still part of this network. We have got to know a lot of people – it’s like one big family.

Caitlin went to nursery in Penmill at the age of three – she loved nursery. Caitlin was well advanced with her speech and walking, she had hospital boots to help her walk straight. Caitlin had the Mickey peg put in at the end of March 2014 – she was able to get about without pulling on the tube. The tube was removed in September 2015. In January 2016 Caitlin had not healed and we were told that stomach acid was leaking; after more visits to the doctors it was decided that Caitlin would need to be stitched up inside – this was another three month wait.

Caitlin is now doing well and she is steadily putting on weight – she is eating little and often and drinking a little. She is now five and beating all the milestones!

During the month of October, the Malinson family organised a fundraising event on to raise money for SWAN UK. The event took place in their local pub where they held a raffle, ‘guess the name of the teddy’ and a head shave.
