I am Rhiannon Horsman and I live with my mum Sara, my dad Dave and my little brother, Aidan who is nearly seven. I am eleven years old and am from Leeds.
Aidan has been in and out of hospital since he was born in 2010. He now has a feeding tube as well as a portacath. He finds some everyday things difficult due to the undiagnosed condition.
Aidan is a loud, outgoing and boisterous little boy. He likes spending time with his family and friends and his iPad. He doesn’t like not being centre of attention or being left alone in a room. He enjoys climbing, football, performing arts and Beavers. We enjoy reading Harry Potter and watching the Thundermans together.
Aidan has swallow difficulties meaning he can’t drink properly. He has mobility issues which mean he tires quicker than others his ages. He doesn’t feel any different to others, he takes it as: I have this wrong with me, but I don’t care. He makes me feel annoyed, angry, excited, upset and hurt, but he’s my little brother and I love him.
I would not change anything because he is happy and that’s how I like it. So I don’t care.
In my opinion a diagnosis wouldn’t change anything and it’s only a label.
SWAN UK has helped me and my family realise we are not alone. We have been on a lot of SWAN UK events and have loved them all.
Last month I got a WellChild award for ‘Most Caring Young Person’, which was awarded to me for looking after Aidan and helping around the house. It was awarded to me by Dr Ranj (CBbeebies) and Oliver Phelps (George Weasley in Harry Potter). It felt amazing to receive my award.
The awards ceremony was brilliant. I met Gillian McKeith, Oliver Phelps, Dr Ranj, Afton McKeith, Dick and Dom, Karren Brady, Prince Harry, Union J, Mark Foster, Diversity, Stormzy, Dynamo and Gaby Roslin, plus more I can’t remember.
Meeting Prince Harry was overwhelming and I felt a lot of emotions before finally meeting him. He was really nice and I’m really glad I met him.
My family felt super proud and happy. I’m thankful for all the help I have received. To watch my awards video clickhere.
